Steering and brakes are THE two most important systems on any motor vehicle. Neglecting these very important systems on your auto is not an option. They have to be in top performing condition at all times. At the very least, an accident is in your future – or worse if not attended to. This issue will focus on the steering components and how to spot trouble.
From the steering wheel to the wheel ends, the steering system on an auto is both complicated and efficient. If your steering has a wandering feeling, or “sticks” when turning the front wheels, have it checked out immediately. If checking this on your own, it is best to have an assistant to help you. After making the vehicle safe to work on: jacks, wheel chocks, etc., have your assistant unlock the steering column and turn the wheel left and right without actually turning the wheels. What you are looking for here is any play in the steering pitman arm, drag link, and inner and outer tie rod ends. Look at where the threaded stem goes into the hole of the inter locking piece. This is usually secured with a castle nut and a cotter pin. If any play is noticed, replace all necessary components as needed.
When replacement of said components is being done, pay close attention as to how many turns it takes to remove the part. It is also a good idea to count and record how many threads are showing before removal. This will aid in helping you with the vehicle’s alignment. If not sure how to perform an alignment, make an appointment with a local alignment or tire shop and have this done. A vehicle that is not properly aligned will eat tires faster than Mark Martin on a road course. Double and triple check all fasteners, pinch bolts, and cotter keys. Check and top off power steering fluid, and if there are any leaks in this area, repair at once, also.
Ask your local parts professional to get you replacement steering components that are greasable. Moog is a good supplier of high quality steering components, and are available at most after market auto supply stores. Be aware of your auto’s steering performance, and if something doesn’t seem correct, check it out at once.
