Do you have family that lives far away, and you take your children on road trips to visit your family? Do you enjoy vacations that involve a lot of traveling in the car, but have trouble keeping your kids entertained during the ride? Here are some great ways that you can keep your kids entertained in the car during long trips.

• Get your kids involved in the trip by showing them a map of your route. Mark easy to identify landmarks along the way on a map that they can carry with them in the car, and ask them to tell you when they see these locations. This will keep them busy while they look out for the landmarks, and will make them feel more included in the trip rather than just being along for the ride.

• Bring car friendly snacks that your kids can enjoy along the way. Sticky or crumbly foods are out, but healthy, portable snacks like grapes, nuts, and bananas are all great ideas. Depending on the age of your child, a water container with a screw on top is a good way to keep them hydrated.

• If you have a portable DVD player or a player installed on the backs of the seats in your vehicle, be sure that you bring some entertaining movies and television shows for your children to watch while you’re on the road. These are best saved for further into the trip, when your children are starting to lose their patience and growing antsy.

• Play some of the traditional road trip games, including “I-Spy” and the License Plate Game. If you’re rusty on the rules of the game, you can either look it up before you leave or come up with a fun, new twist on the game along the way.

• Give your kids coloring books, crayons, and handheld toys that they can use while you’re driving. The exact items you choose will depend on the age of your children. If you have older children, consider taking them to a store before you leave and letting them pick out one magazine or book to keep them entertained during the drive.

Driving on long trips with children can be difficult, but keeping them entertained is the key to an enjoyable ride.

These are some great tips! I use almost all of them from bring activities like crayons and coloring books to snacks. The one think I do bring is my iPad instead of a DVD player. I have the DISH Remote Access app through my provider DISH Network and it allows me access to all our DVR recordings and subscription channels. With the Sling Adapter hooked up to my employee account, I have that ability. The kids can watch all their favorite shows live from anywhere we can get a Wi-Fi connection. Besides that app, the kids can play games, and watch movies as well. I strap it to the headrest and they are set to go. It is such an awesome entertainment system.
