Buy A Car On Impulse, Good Or Bad Idea?

Buying a car and impulse buying are not two things usually associated with each other. But, it does happen more often than you think. Everyone in their lives has heard the lessons of impulse buying, and that lesson taught is usually followed with a "don't do it" theme. This may be good advice in the supermarket, or when purchasing a house, but does it really apply in the car buying market? The answer may surprise you.

Perhaps the car in question has just come up on the market, and it is just the car you have been keeping your eye out for. This wouldn't qualify as an impulse buy, but more of an intervention purchase. Maybe this make and model is in short supply. Then buying a car in this fashion could be labeled an opportunity purchase. Your homework is already done, and you know your budget, so then you were in the right place at the right time. If the car checks out and seems like it is in decent shape, you just filled a need for transportation in your life.

Perhaps you are one of the types that money burns a hole in your pocket. You probably fit into the impulse buyer category already. But remember, this is about buying a car. The need for a good quality auto for everyday needs is there, so if something catches your eye, why not go ahead and buy it right on the spot? The car will sell anyway, and if this is a good deal, then why pass it up? Everyone knows what to look for when checking out a car for sale, and this goes into every car buying purchase. The only thing different is the timing. While others will consider the decision to buy a car, some will act quickly.

Thankfully, the technologies that modern day cars and trucks are equipped with make an impulse buy a relatively safe thing to do. Most will perform flawlessly for well over one hundred thousand miles or more, and the safety features are second to none. Paint finishes, for the most part, will withstand years of different types of weather. Interiors will come back alive with a little scrubbing and a short afternoon of your time. Reset the baseline schedule for routine service, and buying a car on impulse doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all.

Car buying and selling will continue to be a large portion of our economy. Timing is the only real factor in question, here. Longer term decision making, or a shorter time frame, the decision you make will be all yours.
