When most people purchase an automobile, they usually don't expect to keep it for the rest of their lives. People's situations change, and a compact car that might have
been useful when you were a bachelor, might begin to seem a bit cramped should you decide to get married and have children. Or perhaps the opposite is true, or the rising
gas prices eventually force you to switch to a more economic vehicle to save money? If you see such a situation of your own in the future, it may be wise to consider what
the resale value of the car you're thinking about purchasing will be like in a few years. Some cars are better at holding their value than others, and with what the public
desires, affects demand. This in turn affects the amount of money you'll be able to sell your car for.
In today's economy for the high level of energy demand, I predict that the cars that will best retain their value in the future will be small, lightweight, and fuel efficient
cars. Hybrid cars especially will hold their value comparably well into the future. On the other side of that coin, a big heavy gas guzzling SUV receive little demand in a
time when you see costs of $60 or more to fill up the tank.

In Galves, the "New 2008 vehicles named best resale value" article demonstrates this observation pretty clearly when you look at the top 10 models list. The vast
majority of vehicles are compact or ultra compact cars. Not surprisingly, there is not one truck or SUV on the list. I could discuss the different models and what about them
specifically gives them such a good resale value, but I don't think the reasons from car to car are different enough to warrant that distinction.
In today's world, regarding
what qualities to look for in an automobile, there is only one trump card, and that is the ever increasing price of gasoline. If you choose a vehicle that is fuel efficient
and reliable you are pretty much guaranteed that it will retain its value quite well. Remember these guidelines and have fun hunting for the next car of purchase.
