The General Motors Company (GMC) Sierra and the Chevy Silverado have been practically the same throughout history. However, the Chevy Silverado is advertised as the lower of the two vehicles, while the GMC Sierra is known for its luxuries. Other differences between the Silverado and the Sierra include trim, options, and grilles. The two have also offered features, such as Quadrasteer, at different times.
The GMC Sierra comes in several models, with several options for each model. The models include the light duty, heavy duty, hybrid, and C3/Denali. Options available on each model include the cab length, cargo bed, speed/transmission and type of engine.
The light duty Sierra has three options for both the cab length and the cargo bed. The three cab lengths that are available are the 2-door short cab, 3 or 4-door extended cab, and front-hinged 4-door crew cab. The cargo beds that are available are the short box, standard box, and long box. This truck also has the option of three different 4-speed automatic transmissions and a 5-speed transmission. Engines available on the light duty Sierra include the 4.3 Liter V6, 4.8 Liter V8, 5.3 Liter V8, and the 6.0 Liter V8.
Like the light duty Sierra, the heavy duty Sierra also has options for the cab length. However, there are only two cab length options, which include the regular cab and the crew cab. Unlike the light duty Sierra, the heavy duty Sierra does not have cargo bed options. In addition, the heavy duty differs from the light duty in that it is only available with a V8 engine. These engines include the 6.0 Liter and 8.1 Liter Vortec and the 6.6 Liter Duramax.
In 2005, General Motors Company introduced the Sierra as a hybrid. This hybrid is only a mild hybrid design because it serves only engine cranking and starting, battery charging, and powering accessories. In 2008, the mild hybrid design was discontinued, but was reintroduced as a two-mode hybrid for the 2009 model.
The last model of the Sierra is the C3/Denali. This version, first as the C3 in 2001 then changed to the Denali in 2002, is all wheel drive. The only difference between the C3 and the Denali was the Quadrasteer, which was discontinued in 2005.
