Hummer H3

Review Of Hummer H3

In the early 1980's, GM embarked on designing a light, tactical vehicle for the military that would be very mobile with great off road capabilities and the Humvee was born. This later evolved into vehicles for civilian use, called Hummers and then, in 2006, the H3 was developed. As the smallest of the series, the H3 is a midsized SUV while the H3T is a midsized pick up truck. Despite being environmentally unfriendly, GM had originally planned to take H3 globally by the end of 2006.

The first H3 was introduced in 2006 and was the first to be built by GM. Since then, they have introduced the H3 truck in 2008. Unfortunately, the future does not look particularly promising. In 2008, GM announced that by March 31, 2009 a decision would be made that would determine the course of the H3. The brand would be sold, discontinued, or redesigned.

Critics of the H3 have not been kind to it. The environmentalists have been especially vocal in their objections to its fuel economy and carbon footprint while consumers, reeling at the high cost of gas, have withdrawn from buying "fuel hogs". Making things worse, the fad that had carried the brand for a couple of years may be subsiding. The end result is that, in order for the H3 to survive, many very difficult challenges and obstacles will have to be overcome in order for it to survive.

There are currently three H3 models that are available, base, Alpha, and H3X. In any case, no matter which model is selected, plan on spending at least $45,000 and, in most cases, much more. Standard equipment includes 4WD, manual transmission, 16" wheels, and air conditioning. The Alpha is the more powerful version with more options and a V8 engine while the H3X comes with 18" wheels and more standard features. All models come with a choice of eight exterior colors, leather seats, and Bluetooth connections. However, don't expect much in the way of fuel mileage as all models average between 14 and 16 miles per gallon.

Initial sales of the H3 in 2006 started out strong but, along with high fuels costs and poor car reviews, sales have slid in recent years. Many car buyers now consider the H3 a luxury that is too expensive to afford. Only time will tell if the H3 will make in to 2010.
