Produced since 1979, the Volkswagen Jetta has had many different altercations. Manufactured for a variety of markets under a variety of names, the Volkswagen Jetta is one of the most popular European cars in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and it is expected to maintain this popularity for a long time.
The Jetta was originally envisioned as a sedan version of the popular Volkswagen Golf. Following the Volkswagen tradition of naming cars after winds, it was named after the Jet Stream. Drivers in other places of the world know the call their Jetta: Bora, GLI, Sagitar, Vento, Atlantic, and Fox. It has steadily grown in size, power, and trim throughout its generations. Now known as the Volkswagen Bora in most of the world, the stylish, most recent fifth generation of the Jetta, is a far cry from its utilitarian ancestors.
The Jetta is now an ultra safe and smooth car that offers intuitive controls and a sumptuous interior, along with more foot, and head space than most other compact cars. However, while the modern Jetta is large and luxurious for being a compact car, it remains to have an expensive price tag. Many critics feel that Jetta buyers are not getting their money's worth from this small car. However, the Jetta takes a significantly longer time to produce than many other cars, and this is why we see an inflation in price when we look to purchase this vehicle.
The Jetta has historically been a future-thinking model, with several alternative energy models spanning over the years. An electric version was sold in the early eighties, and since then, methanol, hydrogen, biodiesel, and second generation electric models have been produced in limited quantities. A Jetta hybrid is currently in the planning stages, and Volkswagen promises it to be a success given the national trend toward more fuel efficient cars. Another innovation will be the newly designed Jetta Sportwagen, which will be a new generation of the Jetta wagon, which has been off the market since 2006.
