The one time we always remember to change our wipers is when that first drop of rain hits our windshield. Unfortunately that's the worst time to tackle this easy job. So, if it has been a while since you have replaced your wiper blades, or you can't even remember the last time, then you should take the time to replace your windshield wipers.
Generally, windshield wiper blades are purchased with the blade, its support structure as well as a set of different attachments that allow the same blades to be used on many different makes and models of vehicles.
Step 1: Being that there are literally 100's of different wiper blades to choose from, you need to start by looking up your vehicle's make and model in a reference book. The reference book can be found at any auto parts store. This will provide the information needed to purchase the correct model of blade.
Step 2: All wiper blades come with a set of attachments. You will need to examine the existing attachment. The attachment is a plastic piece that connects the wiper blade to the wiper arm. Then find the new one in your package that most resembles the old attachment.
Step 3: Grasping the windshield wiper arm, gently pull it away from the windshield until the wiper arm is vertical to the windshield.
Step 4: Remove the windshield wiper blade from the arm at the attachment. There are generally three types of removal processes. One type has a small tab that must be depressed for removal; sometimes this is best accomplished using a small screwdriver. The second type will have a small metal bump on the wiper arm. On this type, you will find two tabs, one on either side. Simply depress both tabs and pull for removal. The third type simply snaps into place.
Step 5: Once the old attachment and blade is removed, install new attachment.
Step 6: Install the new wiper blade onto the windshield wiper arm.
Step 7: Test the wipers. If the wiper blade seems loose or falls off completely then try reseating the wiper blade and attachment.
Tips & Warnings:
. It is better to replace the whole wiper blade, not just the rubber part. In some areas, this is no longer even an option.
. Changing wiper blades for the first time can be frustrating. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Most auto parts store employees would be more then glad to help you.
. Take care not to allow the wiper arm to snap against the windshield, especially without the wiper blade installed. This can cause damage to your windshield.
. Run the wipers and then turn the engine off when they are in the up position on the windshield. This makes it much easier to get at the wiper attachment.
. Wiper Blades should be changed at least twice a year. You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration by replacing both blades at the same time.
