I paid for my first car with my own money when I was in college. It was a beat up Chevy Nova but it ran like a dream and it had all of the room you could ever hope
for. When I entered my senior year of college, I decided to sell the car so that I could buy a vehicle more suited to my lifestyle. I put an ad in the local paper, a
sign in the window of the Nova, and then I waited for the phone to ring.
After waiting only a week, the phone rang with someone who was extremely interested in my Nova but was honest when he said that he was looking for parts. He wanted to see how it ran and he wanted to test drive it. I was not asking a lot for the Nova and I wanted to get rid of it so it didn't matter to me. We made arrangements for him to come and test drive the Nova.
The night before the prospective buyer was coming to check out the Nova, I was not sleeping so well. I remember lying in bed, wishing I could fall asleep when I heard the sound of tires squealing, a crash, and then tires squealing again. I ran outside to find that someone had hit and run my Nova on the front driver side quarter panel. The car was significantly damage. The car could not be driven anymore, so I decided to leave it parked.
I called the police to file a report. I filed the report and then went back to sleep. I figured that since the prospective buyer only wanted the Nova for parts that he would not care if it was a little damaged. He showed up that morning and saw the damage. When I told him it couldn't be driven, he told me that the cost to tow it was more than the vehicle was worth. Apparently, he did not want the parts as badly as I thought. He left without buying the vehicle and I was forced to sell it to a junkyard for $20.
